Benni Cinkle and Rebecca Black from the music video "Friday"
Andy and Jenn talked to Benni Cinkle, who was a normal 8th grader one day, and a viral internet video star the next.  But it wasn't necessarily a compliment at first.  There was a Facebook fan page of the "The girl in pink who danced awkwardly in Rebecca Black's Friday" - but Benni talks about how she took the criticism and turned it around to be a positive.  We also talk about how teenagers can cope with cyberbullying and what parents can do to help.

Listen to the Interview with Benni Cinkle - The "Girl in pink" from the Rebecca Black Friday Music Video here.

Friday Flashback is an excuse to go back into the vault of Christian Music past and find the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The first Friday Flashback is definitely good, and perfect for Good Friday.  There's something about hearing the lyrics "He's Alive" over and over again, to remind me and to make it real in my mind that Jesus did raise from the dead for our sins.  He's alive!

I saw this recipe online, and what a cool way to talk about Easter with your children!  I am definitely going to do this with my 4 year old.

I found this recipe at westerntractmission.com

To be made the evening before Easter. You need;

  • 1 cup whole pecans
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • zipper baggie
  • 3 egg whites
  • wooden spoon
  • Pinch salt
  • tape
  • Bible

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 300 F.
  2. Place pecans in zipper baggie and beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. After Jesus was arrested He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.
  3. Smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl. When Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.
  4. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.
  5. Sprinkle a little salt into your hand. Taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. This represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.
  6. So far the ingredients are not very appetizing.
  7. Add 1 cup of sugar. The sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.
  8. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. The color white represents the purity in God's eyes, of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18, & John 3:1-3.
  9. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.
  10. Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. With a piece of tape seal the oven door. Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 28:65-66.
  11. GO TO BED! You may feel safe to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.
  12. On Easter morning, open the oven and take a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow!
  13. On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.

So I have been following the Rebecca Black "Friday" song for a few weeks, I think it is fantastic.  If you don't know what that is, here is the original song that rose to internet fame a few weeks ago:

over 95 MILLION people have watched this video.  And now there are some "parodies", like the Christian version, "Sunday"

... Or my personal favorite, the "EPIC MULLET GUY" doing his version:

If you search "Rebecca black parody" on youtube you get 5,220 videos!  All that would not exist if Rebecca didn't take a chance and make a song and video.

For the record, I think it's awesome that she CREATED something, when so many of us just tear down.

It made me think about my life.  Am I a "parody" of someone else, somebody that I see that (I think) is cooler than me?

There are 5,220 parodies of Rebecca's song on YouTube.  There is only 1 original.

Be the unique person that God has created you to be.  You were created for this specific time to do things that only you can do!

Today, be the original, not the parody.
